After a non-stop week in Detroit, we’ve completed our inaugural mass deployment, Operation Motown Muster. This large scale service project consisted of five consecutive project days at four different locations including Central High School, the Osborn neighborhood city parks, Priest Elementary School and Recovery Park.
A crew of 72 kick ass veterans from across the country descended upon Detroit to be of service. They were welcomed and supported by community leaders, local volunteers and corporate partners. The deployment was a display of veterans and civilians alike all pitching in to get the work done. Curious passersby picked up paintbrushes and the local fire station hosed down a would be soccer field when it was too dry for us to lay the new sod.
Amid long hot days of physical labor, the level of commitment and gumption displayed by our veteran volunteers was awe-inspiring. Mind you, many of our veterans used their “vacation time” to attend. Their selflessness and spirit cannot be adequately captured in words or images, but is rather felt in the work they left behind. The spaces they built for community engagement – basketball courts, meditation gardens, and others – were created on the foundation of love and respect we share for one another.
Thank you to each and every person who contributed to making Operation Motown Muster a success, and to our local Detroit platoon for their continued efforts!
