I was recently asked what advice I would give to my children, if the time came when I could impart one last piece of fatherly wisdom. Without hesitation, I knew it would be this: never quit.

It’s an ethos that carried me through Afghanistan, Somalia and all of the hard places in between. As a member of the 20th Special Forces Group, my peers and I were consistently asked to solve challenges when it mattered most and lives were on the line. It was a calling, and I was happy to answer whenever my country asked.

Eventually the time came to hang up my uniform. I knew it would be tough. I was leaving behind the rush that came with deploying to dangerous places and knowledge that the men and women beside me had my back no matter what came our way.

Luckily, I wasn’t alone in this transition. My wife, Eva, was there every step of the way. She was and continues to be my life coach, my inspiration, my everything. So when I was asked to lead The Mission Continues’ San Antonio 1st Service Platoon, I knew it was an opportunity that I could not pass up. I was ready to again answer the call to serve, and this time with my wife and children at my side.

Today, I’m proud to lead more than 400 veterans, volunteers and their families as we tackle our new mission. We serve the EastPoint community, one of the oldest and most diverse regions of the city, which until recently had fallen on hard times. EastPoint now serves as a source of inspiration, and we’re proud to be doing our part to make it a more welcoming and prosperous neighborhood for those who call it home.

I encourage you to join us in this mission. In addition to our team in San Antonio, 60 more Service Platoons operate in cities nationwide and hundreds more veterans serve through The Mission Continues Fellowship Program.

We may no longer wear the uniform, but we haven’t hung up our ability to solve tough challenges. There is much work to be done, and we won’t quit until the mission is complete.
